Maths- Slide, Flip and Turn.

Today we looked at sliding , flipping and turning.
We started by asking "What do we already know about slide, flip and turn?"
We wrote our responses on sticky notes to then look at it again later on to see how much we have learnt.
Miss Shaw showed us the three ways we can move objects, then we completed a couple of activities to help us remember and get better at sliding , flipping and turning.
We then chose an object from the foam shape container and traced it onto paper. We then slid it along the paper and retraced it, to show how it moved. We then either chose turn or flip as our second option and also showed that on a sheet of paper.
The year 4 kids also looked at rotation, translation, and reflection.

Here are some online games to help you get better Room 9

Globalisation: Commonwealth Games and Communication.

This term we have begun looking at Globalisation.
Our first activity was to show Miss Shaw what we thought this topic was all about. We placed our topic banner on the floor and set off to find images that we thought might be related to our topic. This showed Miss Shaw what we already knew.

Today we then began looking at the following statement:
We live in an interconnected and interdependent world.

What does this mean for Room 9 students?
How do we know?
What evidence do we have?
Why do we?

Room 9, please post a response to the questions above.

Using Google as a search engine.

In Room 9 we are focussing on reading and writing information reports. At a later stage we will gather information to write our own information report.
Today we learnt about how we can use different resources to find the facts we need. We looked at how to use library books, school journals, our school readers and encyclopedias. We are now going to learn about how useful the internet can be to help us find the important facts we need.

We watched a little video about the search engine we know as Google. It was very interesting and amazing how Google works really hard to find information for us.

Room 9: Your Mission.

Using the search example used in the video, (cheetah running speed)write the URL that appears in the first part of writing. Also...if you can ...write the name for the little part of information in the middle. It starts with "S"

Fractions- Parts of a Whole

During maths we have been learning how to:
*recognise fraction symbols for halves, thirds, quarters, fifths,
*find fractions of a set e.g. what is half of 18?
*changing improper fractions to proper fractions e.g. 12/3 = 4 and 1/3
*identifying decimals to 3 decimal places.

We have talked about the top number and the bottom number in fraction symbols and how fractions are "parts of the whole".

As our maths books are getting quite full, and it was a lovely day, we decided to show off all of our new learning about fractions by drawing them all over the concrete outside our room.

Room 9-your mission: Tell us what your new learning has been while looking at fractions. Also tell us what activity you enjoyed the best: the mimio fractions or the concrete fractions.

Vegetable Soup

Last friday Kowhai Syndicate made hot soup! The soup was a creation we made using the vegetables that we planted last term.
Room 9 planted bok choy and and spring onions in their wedge of the circle garden on the 20th May. The vegetables were planted as part of our Healthy Eating and Sustainability unit.

For some of us, it was the first time that we had grown vegetables and made fresh soup.
Room 9, your mission: Please comment on any aspects of this process that were new to you and what you enjoyed the most.
It would also be good if you can comment about healthy food and how you have made any changes to what you eat because of your new learning.

Corbans Art Visit

Today Room 9 and Room 8 visited the Corbans Art Centre as part of our Celebrations unit. It was a hands on session where we were able to produce a piece of art that contained three media. The inspiration for our works came from the Pacific art commonly known as Tapa. Joy began the session by showing us some very import tapa that belonged to her family. From there we went downstairs to the work shop and began the process.
We began by brainstorming ideas about our recent two week school holiday. From that we selected four aspects to tranfer into symbols which would then be included in our piece.
It was all over far too quickly. We had a great time and learnt alot by working throught the art process.
Room 9-Your Mission: Please post comments related to the following aspects
*what facts you learnt about Tapa
*what media we used to create our art. (There was three).
*things you enjoyed about the art.
*new learning about any aspect of the day.

PS Don't forget that Joy will be reading your comments so please let her know how much you learnt from her teaching today.

Words Instead of 'Said'.

As part of writing today we focused on dialogue. We are learning about dialogue because myths and legends often have dialogue to help paint a better picture of the characters involved.
While we were looking at some examples of dialogue we found some words that are more descriptive than "said".Here is a list of words we thought we'd use instead.
Please add some more to the list by posting them.

WALHT identify important foods for a balanced and healthy diet.

Following on from Harolds visit, we then looked closely at the food pyramid.
